Understand the benefits of giving wisely ...
Why giving stock is better than cash ...
The Children's Home (TCH) has been in existence since 1864, and you want to ensure that TCH will be a resource for children and their families for years to come.
You would like your gift to make a difference for TCH, but are concerned about your own future financial needs and those of your family.
We truly appreciate your support which is why we would like you to know about this financial planning info so you can plan your gift to us, so that it benefits you in return.
You can use appreciated securities as your gift. This may cost you less than the tax deduction you receive and in return, you can provide a gift without using cash. Click here for an example: Buy Low, Give High!.
Although cash seems to be the easiest way to give, it may not yield the best benefits for you! You can instead, increase the benefit of your gift by giving appreciated stocks, bonds, mutual fund shares or other appreciated property. You can receive a income tax charitable deduction for the full, fair market value of the securities, and not for the lower dollar amount you originally paid for them. In addition, you pay no capital gains tax on any appreciation that took place. Buy low and give high. It's a great way to share your appreciation with TCH!
What are the comparative benefits of giving $10,000 in XYZ stock purchased in 2004 for $2,000 (i.e. it has an $8,000 capital gain) vs. $10,000 in cash?

Gift Value $10,000 $10,000
Capital Gains Tax Savings (15% rate) $0 ($1,200)

Cost of Gift to You $6,600 $5,400

You may be holding assets that would be valuable to TCH, but are not currently critical to your financial well-being, such as a life insurance policy that you no longer need, or real estate, such as a second home)or undeveloped land, or a collection of coins, artworks or books that you no longer wish to display in your home.
You can make a gift that costs you nothing during your lifetime. You can designate TCH as a beneficiary of your will or revocable trust, or a beneficiary of your pension or retirement plan, and leave your cash flow and current financial planning intact.
You can be a giving partner with TCH by making arrangements to continue to live in your home, but deeding it to TCH at some future time, or, by selling us the property at a charitable discount. By doing one of these, you are supporting TCH and arranging for yourself, lifetime income at the same time.
