Through our structured recreational and sports activities children and youth at The Children's Home are able to relax, have fun and be themselves. We provide an array of services including individual and team sports, intramural and intermural opportunities. The Children's Home is an active member in the New Jersey Residential Recreational League (NJRRL) for flag football and Costal Athletic League (CAL) for basketball and softball. In addition to team oriented sports we are a member of the All-American Soap Box Derby, where individual children and youth compete in soap box car races.
Our approach helps them to build character and lets them become more social with other kids. Secondly, they learn some of life's lessons, for instance, winning and losing, how to work together in times of desperation and disgrace, and happiness and joy. It also gives kids a chance to get away from all the other things they do, and have fun, while staying in shape and keeping healthy
All of our recreational activities are designed to foster children and youth becoming more confident, evolving independently and working as part of a team or group. It is through sports that many first learn to appreciate and celebrate diversity, tolerance, and understanding, promoting non-demanding friendships of support. We have found that structure therapeutic sports and recreation can encourage self-motivation and cooperation, which are skills that can be put into use in the eventual home, school, and workplace.
